18 Habits of Emotionally Intelligent Leaders Habit #8 - Uncompromised

Over 18 weeks, we are excited to introduce 18 habits that separate emotionally intelligent leaders from the rest. These habits fill the gap between mediocre, good, and great leaders.

People perform to the level of their leader’s expectation.

When you set a high standard for excellence, there is no room for mediocrity.

If your team is off-track, you can reset and refocus by re-establishing the expectation of excellence. The first step is understanding what is contributing to the current level of performance. Here are several reasons your team by not be achieving at the expected level.

1.    Lack of clear goals and vision – When teams do not buy into the vision or they do not understand their individual contribution to the goal, they tend to underperform.

2.    Ineffective communication – This is one of the most challenging aspects in any company. Yet, it is central to excellence. There are multiple failure points possible simply due to the complexity of communication.

3.    Insufficient leadership and management support – Highly skilled leadership is not something we are born with. Great leadership is developed. Excellence is impossible to achieve when leaders do not have the skills and tools to get the job done.

4.    Resistance to change – There’s an expected level of resistance that comes with change. When leaders do not recognize and manage resistance, the workplace and work product suffers.

5.    Lack of continuous improvement – Boredom breeds mediocrity. When teams are doing the same thing, day after day, they risk losing the energy, enthusiasm, and excitement necessary to keep work performance high.

Excellence is not something you do. You cannot achieve it through a one-time event.

Excellence is a series of processes that comes through skillful leading, engaging, challenging, and developing your team.

Don’t forget to include systems and processes that foster a culture that is both supportive and accountable.

8 Habits of Emotionally Intelligent Leaders Habit #8 - Uncompromised - Strategies

When we lead our team beyond mediocrity into the realm of excellence ⚡ , it can be uncomfortable for everyone involved. Yet, when we commit, an immeasurable reward is waiting as we stretch and reach across the threshold.

It’s not an easy thing for leaders to do. I’ve been right there with you.
Let’s look at a few strategies that can help you move your team toward excellence.

1️⃣     Foster Innovation: Expect, encourage, and support innovative thinking within the team. This only works if you develop a safe space for experimentation and risk-taking, even if some ideas don’t lead to immediate success. Innovation is a key element for driving excellence over the long term.
2️⃣     Empower Decision-Making: Delegate authority and decision-making to team members whenever possible. Empowering your team to take ownership of their work can lead to increased accountability and creativity. Without empowerment, the team will behave like “drones” who follow orders.
3️⃣     Set Clear Expectations: Clearly communicate the team’s goals, objectives, and performance expectations. Ensure that each team member understands their role in achieving these goals and knows what success looks like. Ambiguity fuels confusion and chaos.
4️⃣     Encourage Collaboration: No one of us has all the answers. Foster a culture of collaboration and open communication to further your goals of excellence. Encourage team members to share ideas, work together, and support one another. Trust and respect allow each member to share authentically and openly, making a positive and unique contribution.

“We are what we repeatedly do… therefore excellence is not an act, but a habit.” – Will Durant

When you inspire excellence, the team will soar to meet your expectations.
